4 Supplements for your hair, skin and nails

Are your hair, skin and nails looking or feeling dry, brittle or lack luster? Try adding these four supplements to your diet.

In addition to eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as wild Alaskan salmon, freshly ground flaxseeds, and taking care to use sunscreen to avoid sunburn with an SPF of 30, certain supplements may help promote healthy hair, nails and skin. Consider the following:

1. Collagen Powders – known to replenish decreasing collagen production due to aging. Studies show consuming 2 tablespoons daily has shown to reduce wrinkles, improve hair and nail health. Be sure to use a high-quality pure collagen powder, not sourced from China.

2. Evening Primrose Oil – nourishes skin, hair and joints by supplying essential omega-6 fatty acids. Also great for Eczema. Look to start dosing with 500mg twice daily.

3. Omega-3 – provides the much-needed fatty acids EPA and DHA. Aim for a goal of 2000 mg of EPA plus DHA total daily.

4. Vitamin D – supports bone and immune health. Best to know your blood levels to dose appropriately, but generally a dose of 1000-2000 IU of vitamin D3 daily is a safe starting point.
